Email marketing can change your business, sure.
But get the basics right first…
By identifying which email marketing “advice” are lies.
So you don’t follow them & make mistakes.
Here are 9 email marketing lies you’ve been told 👇
.
Table of Contents
🟡 Email Marketing Lie #1 – It’s all about selling
Many creators on Twitter are good folks.
Outside tho, there’s this IM (internet marketing) niche.
Where every day, garbage “get rich quick” products are launched.
And every day… everyone sends multiple emails blatantly selling their products.
“What bout ‘value’ emails?” You asked.
Nahhh, there’s no such thing as “value” in this niche.
Only sell, sell, & sell.
Luckily, we’re not in this niche.
.
🟡 Email Marketing Lie #2 – It’s all about value
There exists another group on the opposite end of the spectrum.
Here, people provide value / advice / educate all the time to their list.
Every email & everything they do is about “providing value”.
Selling is taboo.
.
🟡 Email Marketing Lie #3 – Email marketing is hard (or easy)
It’s neither easy nor hard.
But you need to show up (almost) every day to do the work, just like any successful endeavor.
And preservere.
And focus on OUTPUT (not outcome) bc that’s the only thing we can control.
.
🟡 Email Marketing Lie #4 – Subject line is the most important thing
Nope.
The “Last Boss” is.
.
🟡 Email Marketing Lie #5 – You must use double opt-in for an engaged email list
Nope.
As long as you:
- send emails subscribers love to read
- clean your list regularly
Single opt-in can work wonders too.
I used to use double opt-in. Now I use single opt-in.
.
🟡 Email Marketing Lie # 6 – You must have a newsletter to build an email list
My biggest pet peeve is “subscribe to my newsletter”.
You ABSOLUTELY do NOT need a newsletter to build an email list nor to send emails.
.
🟡 Email Marketing Lie #7 – The bigger the list, the more mahhhney $ you make
I’ve seen 1k lists outsell 10k lists.
You don’t need a big list to earn a full-time income.
The better the relationships & trust with subscribers, the more mahhhney you make.
Relationship > Size.
.
🟡 Email Marketing Lie #8 – You can’t do anything about emails landing in Gmail’s Promo Tab
I used to be the donkey who believe that.
I’ve since gotten my own emails + multiple clients’ emails outta Promo Tab & into the Primary Tab.
-> More email opens, clicks, & sales.
Want my help to get your emails outta Promo Tab?

🟡 Email Marketing Lie #9 – Emails landing in spam is 100% the ESP’s fault
ESP = email service provider / email marketing tool
ESP is just one of many factors mailbox providers (Gmail, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.) use to determine inbox/spam placement.
But you the sender also plays a part when emails land in spam.
Things like:
- your from name
- how many images
- your domain reputation
- your email content & subject
- how many links & where they go
.
